Primary Purpose:
Provide strategic leadership for the District’s marketing, communications, and community-facing messaging by shaping and amplifying a clear, consistent narrative across all platforms and audiences. The Director of Marketing & Community Relations ensures the District’s story - what we believe, what we offer, and how we serve students and families - is communicated effectively through campaigns, events, internal and external messaging, and coordinated outreach that positions the District as the District of Choice.
Education / Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field preferred.
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Knowledge of creating and managing marketing projects
- Knowledge of desktop publishing and graphic design
- Superior presentation and analytical skills, plus demonstrated skills to handle a variety of assignments simultaneously.
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to use Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and WordPress
- Ability to implement policy and procedures
- Ability to analyze and interpret data and statistics
- Ability to work under deadline pressure and extra hours if needed on assignments
Experience / Other Requirements:
- Three years of successful communications, marketing, and/or advertising experience in public education preferred.
- Personal cell phone is required to handle district related business, including after hours, or when away from the office on district business.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
District Narrative, Messaging & Brand Stewardship
- Lead development and stewardship of the District’s narrative, messaging framework, and brand voice.
- Ensure consistency and clarity across Districtwide and campus communications.
- Translate District goals, instructional priorities, and initiatives into accessible, family-centered messaging.
- Serve as the internal authority on tone, messaging standards, and communication alignment.
Marketing Strategy & Campaign Leadership
- Lead integrated marketing campaigns that support enrollment, recruitment, retention, and community awareness.
- Oversee creative direction for campaigns across print, digital, video, and live platforms.
- Align paid, owned, and earned media strategies to amplify District priorities.
- Ensure campaigns reflect authentic storytelling and measurable impact.
Internal & External Communications
- Oversee districtwide internal communications to staff, ensuring alignment, clarity, and engagement.
- Guide external communications to families and the community, including districtwide messages and campus-facing frameworks.
- Cultivates proactive relationships with local state & regional media outlets to elevate Comal ISD storytelling & District visibility.
District & Special Events Communications Leadership
- Provide strategic communications leadership for major District and special events, including Opening of Schools, banquets, recognitions, and signature events.
- Ensure event messaging, scripts, branding, visual presentation, and storytelling are cohesive and aligned with District priorities.
- Develop & execute proactive media outreach strategy that positions Comal ISD as a trusted source on education.
- Ensure events reinforce the District’s narrative and values.
Community Relations (Communications Lens)
- Support community engagement through proactive, transparent, and consistent communications.
- Serve as a point of coordination for messaging related to community outreach, family engagement, and parent communications.
- Draft, review, & distribute press releases, media advisories, statements, & pitched stories that amplify district achievements, initiatives, and student & staff success.
Leadership, Integration & Oversight
- Provide leadership and oversight across marketing, communications, social media, web, and storytelling functions.
- Identify gaps or inconsistencies in messaging or delivery and implement improvements.
- Mentor and support Communications staff to strengthen clarity, confidence, and effectiveness.
Measurement & Continuous Improvement
- Monitor and analyze engagement, reach, and effectiveness of communications and marketing efforts.
- Use data and feedback to refine messaging, campaigns, and communication strategies.
- Report insights and outcomes to the Chief Communications Officer and District leadership.
