Dyslexia Coordinator

Primary Purpose:
The primary purpose of a Dyslexia Coordinator is to oversee and implement programs and services for students with dyslexia and related disorders, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, including the Texas Dyslexia Handbook and Texas Education Code §38.003. The role facilitates the district wide systems of support for evidence-based interventions, collaborating with educators, parents, and administrators to support students with dyslexia and related disabilities, for appropriate instructional programs and accommodations to improve reading achievement and academic success.
Education / Certification:
- Texas teacher certification in the area of assignment
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required
- Masters degree preferred
- Endorsement or certification as Reading Specialist, Certified Academic Language Therapist, Multisensory Structured Language Therapist or comparable experience (preferred)
Experience / Other Requirements
- Five years of experience as a classroom teacher
- Experience with technology applications
- Experience with direct dyslexia instruction
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of dyslexia, related disorders, and the assessment and identification process.
- Knowledge of critical, evidence-based components of dyslexia instruction as outlined in The Dyslexia Handbook.
- Demonstrate ability to provide direct dyslexia instruction to support students.
- Knowledge of Special Education processes and procedures.
- Ability to manage caseloads, coordinate services, and lead dyslexia program initiatives within the school district.
- Demonstrate proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and IEP software.
- Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and work collaboratively with others.
- Demonstrate skills in training and supporting educators on dyslexia awareness, instructional strategies, and accommodations.
- Demonstrate ability to structure the day to complete varied tasks efficiently while prioritizing appropriately.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Audit district level data to support correct coding of students with direct dyslexia instruction and review reports with supervisor every in alignment with PEIMS department checks with campuses (6 weeks).
- Coordinate the distribution and assignment of systems to aid students with reading (ex: Learning Ally).
- Assist campuses with consultation requests related to dyslexia and related disorders.
- Collaborate with special education directors to develop, implement, and evaluate the dyslexia program of the District.
- Attend ARD Committee meetings (as required) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information specific to Dyslexia.
- Prioritize on campus support for all providers of dyslexia services with alignment between dyslexia support teachers and special education teachers.
- Establish a system of support for Admission, Review, Dismissal Committees in interpreting assessment data and results for IEP programming decisions.
- Design, support, and facilitate staff development programs consistent with the District and National standards for professional staff development and supportive of content and performance standards.
- Train and support all dyslexia providers in the collection and analysis of data for progress monitoring.
- Train all dyslexia providers in the district approved methodology/dyslexia curriculum, to include modeling and coaching instructional practices.
- Train, monitor, and maintain Dyslexia Code records for students with disabilities.
- Facilitate and plan events, such as a Dyslexia Parent Awareness Night, with a focus on disability awareness and available supports and services.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and data.
Professional Development
- Attend appropriate professional meetings and workshops to maintain proficiency and to acquire new ideas for instructional improvement.
- Obtain annual training in the development of the IEP, legal updates, dyslexia updates, special education IEP software, and other area(s) as identified by self or supervisor.
School/ Organization Improvement
- Perform other duties and accept other responsibilities as assigned.
- Properly maintaining district records, adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department records.
