What we’re looking for: The New Braunfels Public Library is seeking motivated, coachable, and customer-focused individuals to join our team. Under direct supervision, the Library Assistant provides high-quality library services to the community through excellent customer service, technology assistance, and program support. Positions in this classification staff public service points, assist with materials and facilities management, and perform a wide variety of clerical and technical duties that keep the library running smoothly.
Placement as Library Assistant I, II, or III:
Determined based on qualifications, experience, and demonstrated competencies. Advancement to higher levels occurs through experience, performance, and organizational need.
Examples of specialization:
Circulation and Customer Service, Youth or Teen Services, Adult Services, or Collection Services. Library Assistant I/II/III can be assigned to another specialization according to business need.

Library Assistant I
Performs general library support work under supervision. Focuses on developing proficiency in customer service, circulation procedures, and basic technology assistance.
Duties include:
- Provides excellent customer service to the community by assisting patrons at public service points, responding to inquiries, and helping users locate library materials or access technology.
- Performs circulation tasks such as check-in/check-out, holds processing, and issuing library cards.
- Responsible for managing workflow, responding to patron concerns, and addressing facilities issues when assigned.
- Monitors multiple points of communication and refers inquires to the Lead on Duty or other staff when appropriate.
- Assists in opening and closing procedures and ensures the safety and cleanliness of the library.
- Shelves library materials and assists with daily facility upkeep.
- Provides technology and eLibrary assistance to patrons in a program setting.
- Identifies items for replacement or rebinding and repairs library materials.
- Assists with outreach activities, displays, and program setup or cleanup.
- Participates in opening and closing duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- One (1) year of customer service experience.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Library Assistant II
Duties include:
- Performs duties of Library Assistant I with added responsibility for independent program work and reporting.
- Plans and implements library programs and events.
- Prepares routine reports and assists with data entry or materials management.
Minimum Qualifications:
- One (1) year of library experience or one (1) year at the Library Assistant I level.
- Experience assisting with program planning.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Library Assistant III
Duties include:
- Performs duties of Library Assistant II.
- Compiles and prepares statistical or performance reports.
- Assists with development and maintenance of procedure documentation.
- Trains staff to ensure compliance with library policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible library experience or three (3) years at the Library Assistant level.
- Experience training staff or assisting with operations preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Required Knowledge of:
- Public library operations and customer service principles.
- Basic reference and technology support.
Required Skill in:
- Delivering high-quality service in a fast-paced environment.
- Performing circulation, clerical, and technical library duties accurately.
- Using Microsoft Office Suite, web browsers, and library technology.
- Communicating effectively and courteously with patrons and coworkers.
- Organizing workload and managing time efficiently.
Required Ability To:
- Follow oral and written instructions and work independently or in a team environment.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and flexible attitude.
- Learn new technologies and adapt to change in a dynamic environment.
Your work environment:
- Work is performed in a library setting and may involve sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time.
- May drive a library vehicle on scheduled routes or to outreach events.
- Must be able to safely push or pull loaded book carts and lift or carry items weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends at any New Braunfels Public Library location as required.
- May be required to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency or disaster.
