What we’re looking for: Motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join the City of New Braunfels Public Library team. Under direct supervision, performs a variety of routine duties in support of New Braunfels Public Library operations; shelves and maintains library materials; assists in maintaining the Library’s facilities; and provides general assistance to library patrons.

The responsibilities you’ll be trusted with:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Assists in providing for the delivery of high-quality library services to the public.
  • Sorts library materials and organizes book carts prior to shelving.
  • Sorts, processes and shelves books, periodicals, and/or other assigned library materials.
  • Performs a variety of circulation duties, responding to patron inquiries, checking books in and out and assists patrons in locating library materials.
  • Evaluates and recommends library items for repair, rebinding and/or replacement and assists with same tasks.
  • Participates in opening and closing duties.
  • Participates in shelf reading as assigned.
  • Dusts and cleans library shelves; re-shelves misplaced items.
  • Straightens library tables and chairs; assists in maintaining the Library’s facilities.
  • Responds to routine patron inquiries regarding library materials and services.
  • Assists in accepting donations from patrons in various weather conditions and can include lifting/carrying boxes of materials up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Your areas of knowledge and skills most important for this role:

Education and Experience:

  • Must be sixteen (16) years of age; AND one (1) year customer service/public interaction experience is preferred.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Excellent customer service standards and protocols.

Required Skill in:

  • Performing a variety of routine library functions.
  • Accurately shelving and maintaining library materials.
  • Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high-quality library services to patrons.

Your Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a library environment and is subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to safely push and pull loaded book carts and lift and carry library materials and equipment up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Must be able available to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency or disaster.
